When a major cast member leaves a series, sometimes it’s hard for a show to recover.
In fact, it’s not uncommon for series to recast a character rather than completely write them off.
In the case of Nina Dobrev however, it doesn’t seem likely that she can be recast on “The Vampire Diaries.” Now that it’s been confirmed that Dobrev will be leaving “The Vampire Diaries,” fans are wondering what will happen to her relationship with on-screen boyfriend Ian Somerhalder.
Based on a new spoiler from TVLine , it looks like the subject of the cure is set to put a decent amount of strain on the relationship of Damon and Elena in the coming episodes.
TVLine spoke to executive producer Caroline Dries about the vampire cure and its long term effects on Damon and Elena.
“I can’t confirm that Elena will end her run as a human or a vampire, but know this.
Damon’s decision to share the cure with her (or not) will result in a massive fallout – not Just for Elena but for everyone in the show,” said Dries.
If Damon decides not to share the cure with Elena, a “massive fallout” seems inevitable given Elena’s recent surfacing desires for certain human milestones.
In particular, last week’s episode featured Elena reacting heavily to Jo (played by actress Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) announcing her pregnancy.
More evidence for the idea that Damon may not give the cure to Elena is that Damon admitted he had not yet decided what he’d do with the cure when asked by his mother (played by actress Annie Wersching).
Although Dries promised a “massive fallout” in regards to the cure, showrunner Julie Plec previously promised fans on her personal Twitter that Damon and Elena’s relationship would come to a “respectful end.” Perhaps fans can find comfort that Nina Dobrev’s exit will be handled delicately.
