Variety reported “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2″ will be released in the Imax 3D format when it opens on November 20.
The first part of the adaptation of the last bookm, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ was not released in the Imax format.
Lionsgate and Imax announced that the final movie in the “Hunger Games” franchise will be digitally re-mastered with Imax technology.
“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the second film in the movie series, included an Imax arena sequence for just under an hour.
“I’m thrilled Mockingjay – Part 2 will be in Imax theaters.
Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay – Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic,” director Francis Lawrence told Variety.
The Hunger Games turned Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, who starred as Katniss, the face of the resistance in the battle for Panem into a global superstar.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 also starred Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland reprising their original roles from The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Jon Feltheimer, Chief Executive Officer of Lionsgate, reportedly told analysts that releasing “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2″ in 3D will ensure that the film “conclude with a blockbuster finale the box office.” The three “Hunger Games” grossed over $2.2 billion at the global box office Lionsgate announced that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 will be available on Digital HD on February 17 and on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand on Friday, March 6.
“The number one theatrical release of 2014 is poised to become one of the biggest home entertainment events of 2015,” Lionsgate Home Entertainment President Ron Schwartz and Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer said in a statement.
“With the film’s home entertainment rollout beginning on Digital HD next month and continuing on Blu-ray, DVD and on demand in March, we’re continuing to expand the portfolio of choices we offer to enrich the experience of our consumers,” they added.
According to their press release, “the last two installments of The Hunger Games franchise (Catching Fire and Mockingjay – Part 1) have become the highest-grossing releases at the domestic box office each of the past two years, the first time in decades that a studio has scored back-to-back #1 films of the year and the first time ever for back-to-back sequels.” The returning cast was joined by five-time Oscar nominee Julianne Moore, Mahershala Ali (Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Natalie Dormer (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Wes Chatham (The Help), Elden Henson (Jobs) and Evan Ross (Jeff, Who Lives at Home).
