Fresh from her success in “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” Algerian-French actress Sofia Boutella lands a major role in the upcoming “Star Trek 3.” Deadline confirmed the news, saying that the starlet will be joining the rest of the Enterprise in “a lead role.” It is unknown at this point if she will be playing an ally or an enemy to Captain Kirk and his crew.
Early conclusions claim that she will be appearing as an evil character, stemming from her baddie role as Gazelle in “Kingsman.”
Early rumors had it that Idris Elba (Thor: The Dark World) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Total Recall) were both in the running to play the movie’s villain.
Eric Bana starred in the “Star Trek” reboot as Klingon baddie, Nero.
Benedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) played the antagonist Khan Noonien Singh in the last installment, “Into Darkness.” “Trek 3” is currently being rewritten by cast member Simon Pegg with Doug Jung following the depature of the movie’s director, Roberto Orci.
“Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin now heads the project while Orci will executive produce.
Pegg confirmed that the movie will start with a clean slate and will not carry over ideas from Orci’s early drafts.
“It’s completely new,” the actor told Den of Geek. “I haven’t read Bob (Orci)’s script and they didn’t want us to — so we went back to the drawing board.” He also added that “Star Trek 3” will completely embrace Lin’s vision, saying that the director has “an amazing visual mind.” As usual, the Enterprise crew will be reprising their roles for the third installment.
Chris Pine will still play Captain James Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy, John Cho as Hikaru Solo and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov.
“Star Trek 3” is expected in theaters on July 8, 2016.
