As “So You Think You Can Dance” begins season 12, the new format is both exciting and confusing, and fans have some questions about its intricacies.
In “So You Think You Can Dance” season 12, 20 dancers will be selected for the live stage competition.
However, as noted by Reality TV Magazine , this year the dancers will be divided into stage dancers and street dancers.
“We’re looking for the top 10 stage dancers, which includes tap, ballroom, ballet, contemporary, and the top 10 street dancers-salsa, street tango and, of course, all the hip hop.
Then we join them together and all hell’s gonna break loose,” said executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.
But, as noted by “So You Think You Can Dance” fans, will season 12 take away other staples of the show, in addition to Mary Murphy? “I’m confused about the new format,” commented LC on TVLine .
“Will the street dancers have to do the stage dances and vice versa? That’s one thing I always thought was so amazing about this show, watching some of the street dancers tackle contemporary or jazz, or watching trained ballerinas try to get down and dirty with hip hop or krump.
I hope that’s not gone!” Other observers also wondered if contestants would still be paired up as couples with the opposite gender, or if the new format will allow for more group numbers or rotating partners.
According to FOX, “So You Think You Can Dance” alum Twitch and Travis Wall will be mentoring the street dancers and the stage dancers, respectively.
