The recipient of six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BIF Award, two Saturn Awards, four Drama Desk Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards, Sir Ian Murray McKellen said goodbye to Gandalf.
Hobbit director Peter Jackson and Hobbit actor Sir Ian McKellen are extremely sad as they have bid farewell.
The photo, originally posted on Jackson’s Facebook page was captioned: “Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf.
The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999.
I’m feeling very sad right now.” As far as McKellen is concerned, this is the end of an adventure that began fourteen years ago on October of 1999 when McKellen, whose work spans genre ranging from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction, stepped on to the Lord of the Rings set to film his first scenes in the renowned trilogy.
We guess, even McKellen himself couldn’t have predicted he’d be playing the character of Gandalf in yet another trilogy, all the way into 2013.
After he finished filming Lord of the Rings, he and the other members of the Fellowship got this tattoo.
By the looks of it, it seems he will do anything as permanent to immortalize The Hobbit.
Contrary to his character, which always appears to be of a serious actor, McKellen always looked like he was ready to have fun on the set.
The behind-the-scenes videos on the Lord of the Rings extended editions reveal exactly that.
When he started filming Lord of the Rings back in 1999, Ian McKellen was 59-years-old and now at the completion of Hobit, the veteran actor is 74.
It seems that at 74, he’ll never set foot in Middle Earth again making this a more than just an end to Ian’s time on The Hobiit, it’s more like saying goodbye to Gandalf, one of the most iconic movie characters ever.
We can’t imagine any other actor replacing him and portraying Gandalf.
Here’s reminding everyone how it was when he first saw him in all his wizard glory, in that perfect moment from Fellowship of the Ring as Gandalf the Grey arriving in Hobbiton.
