Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson explains why he chose to play Black Adam rather than Shazam in the movie.
” I just felt Black Adam was inherently more interesting,” he revealed in an interview while promoting “San Andreas.” I felt there were more layers to Black Adam starting out as a slave and then ultimately becoming the anti-hero who we enjoy today.”
Dwayne Johnson also confirms that the “Shazam” movie wil arrive earlier than expected.
“No, I don’t think it is going to be that far away,” when asked by the interviewer if he had to wait until 2019.
“It’s going to be earlier than that. I don’t think 2019.”
For those unfamiliar, Black Adam is a dark wizard and the nemesis of Shazam.
In the comic books, the character has transitioned from being a villain to an antihero. Black Adam gets his powers from the same source as Shazam and the ruler of Khandaq, a small middle eastern village.
The actor explained his character further in an issue of Total Film published by Games Radar .
“It’s all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he’s given the powers, he utilized them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology.”
When IGN asked if he’s sharing the same universe as Henry Cavill’s Superman, Johnson responded, “I think so, and I think you always want to leave that creatively open, that he could join the Justice League.”
“That’s the fun part of creating this character right now and everybody involved, from the studio, from New Line, to Warner Bros as well, to the writer, our producing partners.”
According to Warner Bros. schedule of DC films, “Shazam” is still slated for release sometime in 2019.
