Rajon Rondo is still the king of NBA Trade Rumors.
No one is convinced he’ll stay on a rebuilding Boston Celtics team.
No one, except the fans of the Boston Celtics.
The master plan of the Celtics is to jumpstart the rebuilding process next year.
From Celtics Life, a Boston Celtics blog (obviously homer), a point of view that shows what Boston’s plan is-and that is to keep Rajon Rondo in the long term.
Is it realistic or wishful thinking? “The Celtics still believe they can build a winning team with Rondo as one of the stars, and they want to give themselves until next summer to get that done.
That means they’ll dump Jeff Green and position themselves to stretch Gerald Wallace, opening up $35-40 million in cap space, allowing them to re-sign Rondo and still have the money to lure a max/near max level big man (Marc Gasol, DeAndre Jordan, Greg Monroe, Brook Lopez, Omer Asik, ect.) to pair with Rondo.
Then the Celtics would have Rondo, Star Big Man X, Sullinger, Bradley, Smart, James Young, Olynyk, a top-ten pick in the 2015 draft, a late first round pick in the 2015 draft (Clippers), two 2016 #1s, a 2017 #1 (with ability to swap with Brooklyn’s aging roster), and two 2018 #1s.” The Celtics will have to contend with teams like the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets for those big man free agents-not to mention the players’ respective home teams holding the Bird Rights and capable of offering a five year contract.
That means the players would really want to go to Boston with Rondo as their top draw.
That would be tough, to say the least.
The problem is the Celtics seem to put too much value for Rondo.
They stand firm on their asking price which no team is willing to pay.
