The NBA season is a month away, and the title is being disputed with words and declarations.
Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks has declared Russell Westbrook as the best point guard in the league.
The declaration would be subject to a lot of arguments.
Point guard is the most crowded position in the NBA.
Yet, Brooks had no fear.
From ESPN : “I believe Russell is the best point guard in basketball.
That’s happened over time.
I’ve seen Russell every practice, every game, every film session, and he’s really put a lot of time into being the best point guard in basketball.” When asked about his coach’s declaration, Westbrook would not argue.
He actually claims it: “I do.
I’m very honored to hear him say that, but that’s how I feel.
I mean, I don’t know what to tell you.
I’ve felt that since I got in the league.
I mean, that’s my mindset.
As a rookie, I came in and I felt like I was the best player on the floor every time I stepped on the floor.
That’s just my mindset.
That’s the way I’ve played since college.
It’s not just this year or last year.
It’s how I think when I get on the basketball floor.” There have been a lot of point guards emerging as leaders of their team.
Last year, it was the breakout year for John Wall of the Washington Wizards.
However, it was also a great year for Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors.
In the Western Conference, Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers made big time plays including a buzzer beater that sent the Houston Rockets packing.
Chris Paul, anointed by critics as the “best pure point guard” led the Clippers one game behind the Thunder in controversial fashion.
They could also lay claim to the title.
But the best point guard should be the one who leads their team to a title.
Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs is the best on his team, and they are the best in the NBA.
