Beyblade Movie News Wrap Up: Live Action Beyblade Film, Tom Cruises Mena Starts Filming, & More

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of Beyblade, based on the customizable toy line modeled after Japanese fighting tops. The franchise – which also includes television series, animated features and video games – has reportedly generated $2.5 billion in worldwide revenue.

The studio previously developed Transformers and G.I. Joe toy lines into hit film franchises. Beyblade – which, like Transformers, was developed and manufactured by Takaratomy – currently has plans to launch a new generation of toys in 2017.

Beekle Movie News Wrap Up: Live Action Beyblade Film, Tom Cruises Mena Starts Filming, & More

Jason Reitman will write and direct a new animated film titled Beekle for Dreamworks Animation. It is an adaptation of Dan Santat’s award-winning children’s book The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend.

The film centers on an imaginary friend without a child to imagine him and his search for a best friend. The project marks the first animated film for Reitman, best known for hits like Juno, Up in the Airand Thank You for Smoking.

Wilson1 Movie News Wrap Up: Live Action Beyblade Film, Tom Cruises Mena Starts Filming, & More

Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern are in talks to headline Wilson for Fox Searchlight. Craig Johnson, whose previous film was the Kristen Wiig-Bill Hader dramedy The Skeleton Twins – will direct the project, which starts shooting in June.

Wilson is an adaptation of the Daniel Clowes graphic novel about a middle-aged man who seeks out his ex-wife after his father’s death. Clowes – whose Ghost World was previously adapted into an Oscar-nominated film – also wrote the script for Wilson.

Broad Green Pictures released a new trailer for A Walk in the Woods, the upcoming adventure comedy based on Bill Bryson’s 1998 memoir. Directed by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You), the film stars Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson and Mary Steenburgen.

The film centers on Bryson’s (Redford) return to the United States and his journey along the Appalachian Trail with an old friend (Nolte). It is set to hit theaters on September 2, 2015.

Belle Movie News Wrap Up: Live Action Beyblade Film, Tom Cruises Mena Starts Filming, & More

Amma Asante will direct David Oyelowo (Selma) and Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) in A United Kingdom. She previously directed the critically acclaimed Belle, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Matthew Goode.

The film centers on a controversial marriage between a member of the royal family and a white woman in the 1940s. Written by Guy Hibbert, it is expected to begin filming in October.

Edge of Tomorrow Movie News Wrap Up: Live Action Beyblade Film, Tom Cruises Mena Starts Filming, & More

Universal Pictures has announced that Mena, the upcoming crime thriller starring Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), has begun filming in Georgia. The film reunites Cruise with his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.

The film is based on the real-life story of Barry Seal, a hustler and pilot who handled one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history for the CIA. Mena is filming through July and is set for release on January 6, 2017.
