Matt Damon’s new movie “The Martian” has just released its first promotional stills from the film.
After making the surprise cameo in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” the actor is once again starring in a film that is set in space.
Damon is playing an astronaut who is stranded in another planet, with no hope of rescue.
“The Martian,” directed by Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) released its first photos, and it features Damon and its other star-studded cast members as they roam the Red Planet.
The photos, which were first posted on Empire Magazine showed a desperate Damon, as he is left to fend for himself alone on the planet Mars.
Damon’s character is an astronaut named Mark Watley, and he had journeyed to Mars along with a team of scientists, to perform studies on the planet.
But a storm forces the investigative team to abort their mission, and leave the planet in a hurry.
Watley is injured and is left behind.
In an interview with People magazine , the crew thinks he is dead because of the “instruments on [Watley’s] suit.” But two and a half months later, they discover that he has actually survived.
But Watley’s time is running out, “because frankly he’s got 28 days to live – and that’s if everything goes well for him,” the director said.
Watley responds to his predicament by facing it head on.
“Instead of him collapsing into terror – he knuckles down and actually starts to work out,” Scott added.
“The Martian” is based on a self-published book by author Andy Weir, and already, comparisons are being made to two recent space-set movies: “Interstellar” and “Gravity.” In fact, one of the cast members is “Interstellar” actress, Jessica Chastain.
In “The Martian,” she plays the mission commander of the crew.
Other cast members include Chiwetel Eljiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara and Sebastian Stan.
The movie is set to hit theaters in November.
