“You could see how much he meant to baseball, let alone the San Diego Padres organization,” Medica said of Gwynn.
“You could see it again tonight, and all the great things he’s done for this team and for baseball.
I’m sure he was smiling down after that win.” Jesse Hahn (1-1, 3.72 ERA) picked up his first Major League win in his second career start last week by pitching six innings of one-hit ball against the Mets.
He also notched his first hit, an RBI single, in San Diego’s 5-0 win, according to MLB.com.
“The thing about Jesse we knew in Spring Training — he doesn’t scare off, he’s a guy that doesn’t back down,” said Padres manager Bud Black.
“It was good to see him make some pitches, throw the breaking ball for a called strike and come through in a way where we needed it.” Erasmo Ramirez (1-4, 5.27 ERA) is struggling this season, yet he hasn’t allowed a run in consecutive starts — though those outings lasted just a combined 9 2/3 innings with nine walks against the Rays and Rangers.
“Ramirez seems to be turning the corner a little bit,” said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon, who took the youngster out with a 1-0 lead after five frames in his last start against Texas.
“Our idea was to get him out of there on a good note and let him build off that.”
