“Mad Max” creator George Miller confirms that “Fury Road” is getting a follow-up called “Mad Max: The Wasteland.” The director took to his Twitter and announcedthat there are several sequels in the works:
“We’ve got one screenplay [for the second film] and a novella [for the third].
It happened because with the delays [on ‘Fury Road’], and writing all the backstories, they just expanded,” Miller explained to The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith .
[The second one] is called ‘The Wasteland.’ ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland.'” Variety reports that lead actor Tom Hardy is due to star in three more “Mad Max” films.
“Everything’s based on figures and how things are perceived.
Inevitably it’s a business,” the actor said in a statement.
Hardy actor has taken over Mel Gibson’s character Max Rockatansky, while Charlize Theron plays Furiosa in the latest installment of the post-apocalyptic action franchise.
The film also features “Days of Future Past” actor Nicholas Hoult and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
“Fury Road” is a sequel to Miller’s trilogy of “Mad Max,” “The Road Warrior,” and “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.” Miller, who began with production on “Fury Road” back in 2012 said that he wanted to shoot two films back-to-back, with the sequel subtitled “Furiosa.” Warner Bros., however has not made any announcements yet regarding any more films in the franchise.
The movie is currently in theaters and has already earned $45.4 million in domestic sales and another $64 million from worldwide sales in its opening weekend.
It trailed behind Universal’s “Pitch Perfect 2,” which took first place at the box office with $70.3 million.
