British actress Kate Beckinsale will return to the vampire & werewolf action franchise with “Underworld 5.” Beckinsale’s husband, Lens Wiseman, confirmed the news with IGN , revealing that it is deing developed into a “spinoff” film.
In the interview, he also revealed that a TV series in the works, though he admits he doesn’t know which project will come first.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that “Divergent” actor Theo James will be the central character in the fifth installment, explaining that its not a reboot but “rather an expansion of the existing universe.” James starred as vampire David in 2012’s “Underworld: Awakening,” and then appeared in 2014’s “Divergent,” a movie that has earned $274.9 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, the actor has wrapped projects “Franny” and “London Fields” “Underworld 5” will be produced by Lakeshore Entertainment’s Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg, while Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter) will write the script.
The first “Underworld” film came out in 2003, and has spawned several sequels: “Underworld: Evolution in 2006, “Underworld: Rise of The Lycans” in 2009.
The latest installment, “Underworld: Awakening,” is the most successful installment to date, earning $160 million worldwide; the series has a total gross of $458.2 million worldwide.
