With the departure of Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, the chasm that opened up since Sandra Oh’s departure has only widened.
But with “Grey’s Anatomy” coming back for season 12, should a familiar face make her return?
Recently, TVLine published an article which brought up the idea of Katherine Heigl potentially returning as Izzie Stevens, noting that whatever drama that occurred between the actress and “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes could be resolved.
This idea was openly discussed by Heigl in 2012.
“I’ve told them I want to,” said Heigl to E! Online .
“I don’t know…
Being a showrunner and being a writer of a TV series like that is so complicated that I mean she’s got how many characters are there now? There’s a lot and so she’s balancing about 40 different storylines, so I don’t know if it fits in to their sort of vision for this season or next or however many seasons it goes.” As noted by fans and critics, the possibility seems to have widened given the show’s need for a jumpstart after Dempsey’s departure.
Given that Isaiah Washington returned as Preston Burke in season 10, could it be time for Izzie to invigorate the show as a “Grey’s Anatomy” veteran? Many are supportive of the idea.
“Excellent idea,” commented Jess on TVLine.
“Bringing Izzie back could bring some fresh air to a show that desperately needs it, in my opinion.
It would be very cool to see her interact with Bailey, Alex and Meredith again.”
