“‘Grey’s Anatomy” Patrick Dempsey signed off as the McDreamy Dr.

Derek Shepherd in this week’s episode after more than a decade on the hit hospital show.

Patrick Dempsey took to Twitter to say goodbye to Anatomy fans.

“I want to thank all the fans, what an incredible 11 yrs, I love you all,” Dempsey, 49, Tweeted on Friday.

Dempsey’s character was killed off in a car accident in Thursday’s episode.

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character,” creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes said in a statement.

“I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our McDreamy.

Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example – happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true – of what young women should demand from modern love.

His loss will be felt by all.

Now, Meredith and the entire ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life.

The possibilities for what may come are endless.

As Ellis Grey would say: The carousel never stops turning.” Dempsey shot his final scenes in Seattle, before he drove in the season-opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Dempsey says he will focus on racing as a career.

“In the past I’ve had too many things go on,” Dempsey told FOXSports.com.

“You end up making sacrifices.

At this level, you have to be in the car, you have to train properly, you have to eat properly.

It’s takes complete commitment.

I want to do well and be competitive.

It takes a lot more work to do that.

We have the team and the resources to have the results.” Dempsey will finish work on the two projects “The Limit” and “Fodors.” “I would like to be a producer.

I would commit to a show that is 10 to 12 episodes.

But 24 [episodes] again, I don’t know if I would do that.

It’s a very hard life.

It’s financially rewarding but there comes a point where how much is enough, really?”  he said.

Patrick Dempsey left “Grey’s Anatomy” after 11 seasons in the lead role of Dr.

Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on the Emmy-winning medical drama.

“After 11 seasons on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests,” ABC said in a statement.

“Dr.

Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of McDreamy and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story.

The devotion of ‘Grey’s’ fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent.

McDreamy will be greatly missed, and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.” “Grey’s Anatomy” has not been picked up for season 12.
