Netflix, provider of on-demand internet streaming media and The Weinstein Company, an American mini-major film studio have signed a deal to release Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s sequel (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend) on Netflix and in select IMAX theaters around the world at the same time.
The film will make its debut on August 28, 2015.
In a statement, Harvey Weinstein, TWC’s co-chairman said, “The movie going experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” he continued, “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.” Netflix stated that Crouching Tiger 2 will be the first among numerous major films that will be given a day-and-date release in some IMAX theaters along with a release on Netflix.
Ted Sarandos, the company’s chief content officer has long wanted to release movies in theaters and day-and-date on Netflix, apparently something most exhibitors will never allow which means Crouching Tiger 2 may not be released in IMAX locations which are operated by some of the major chains in America.
Partnering with Netflix is definitely a bold move IMAX is making.
Announcing the deal, Sarandos said, “Fans will have unprecedented choice in how they enjoy an amazing and memorable film that combines intense action and incredible beauty,” he further added, “We are honored to be working with Harvey Weinstein and a world-class team of creators to bring this epic story to people all over the world and to partner with IMAX, a brand that represents the highest quality of immersive entertainment, in the distribution of this film.” Martial arts master, Yuen Wo-Ping has directed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 and the movie is produced by TWC. Michelle Yeoh repeated her role as Yu Shu-Lien while Donnie Yen plays the role of Silent Wolf.
Senior vp of IMAX Corp.
and CEO of IMAX Entertainment, Greg Foster said “IMAX has a terrific opportunity, via this partnership with Netflix, to release Crouching Tiger – a high-quality, action-packed film that is right in our wheelhouse – at the end of the summer blockbuster season.” He further added that he is hoping that the film will play in China where Netflix is not available.
Foster stated, “In territories where we simultaneously release with Netflix, we are excited to offer consumers the option of deciding how, when and where they want to view the film, and exhibitors the opportunity to participate in this alternative form of content in a new and innovative way.”
