The casting rumors for “X-Men: Apocalypse” was expected as the time travel plot in “Days of Future Past” allowed recasting for all the major roles.
So far, the biggest name on the casting net is Chloe Moretz as Jean Grey.
The star of “Kick-Ass” and its sequel, Moretz is one of the biggest young stars of today.
But she is not the sole candidate for the role.
An exclusive report from The Wrap has two other top young actresses in Director Bryan Singer’s shortlist.
“Chloe Moretz, Elle Fanning and Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld are among the teenage leading ladies being eyed to play young Jean Grey in Bryan Singer’s “X-Men: Apocalypse,” while Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe and Timothee Chalamet are under consideration for the role of young Cyclops, multiple individuals familiar with the 20th Century Fox project have told The Wrap.
20th Century Fox had no comment on the respective shortlists.” There are two things to take away from this report.
One is that the X-Men franchise is packaging itself to an even younger audience.
It can be recalled that the franchise already underwent a “semi-reboot” with “X-Men: First Class” when the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender were introduced in the cast.
They are making a similar move here but the (prospective) cast is even younger.
The second thing that stands out is that Bryan Singer seems to have a priority on the Jean Grey casting.
The Wrap stated: “What’s clear at this point is that Singer is aiming high for the role of young Jean Grey, while the director seems more open to casting a fresh face as Cyclops.
The on-and-off couple, often considered the emotional center of the “X-Men” universe, have existed in the comics since the team was launched in the 1960s, with those younger versions recently transported to present day for a major arc under writer Brian Michael Bendis.” One of the major criticisms about Bryan Singer’s portrayal of the X-Men was the shortchanging of Scott Summers/Cyclops who is one of the pillars of the X-Men canon.
With these casting rumors, it seems like the director is threading the same path.
