From all indications, fans can expect an alternate ending for Tris and Four, played by Shailene Woodley and Theo James, respectively, in “Allegiant.”
What that ending might be is still very much up in the air.
In the book, Shailene Woodley’s character Tris made the ultimate sacrifice, which didn’t really sit well with fans who even went to Change.org to post an online campaign to change the ending in “Allegiant.”
The fans said that Shailene Woodley and Theo James’ characters in “Allegiant” should walk away towards the sunset together.
Shailene Woodley, meanwhile, was against an alternate ending as she fully supported Veronica Roth’s vision to kill Tris.
“I thought that it was such a badass decision of Veronica Roth, and so incredibly powerful,” she told EW . “I love that she didn’t sort of buy into the breakdown of what most young adult books, like, the outline of what’s happened in previous young adult books. Men die all the time in films – heroes do.
But a lot of sweet heroines don’t. And so I thought it was a very powerful, profound decision on her part. And I really love that she had the courage and the bravery to do that.”
In a Tumblr post , Veronica Roth said that the change in the title of “Allegiant” to “Ascendant” may hint of an alternate ending for both Theo James and Shailene Woodley.
“What does this mean?” she wrote. “Well, basically, it means there are going to be some changes, but it’s really too early to know exactly what those changes will be or the extent of them.
I know changes always make fans of the books- and the author!- nervous, but hopefully the characters we know (and love. Or sometimes love to hate?) will still be intact, which is really the important thing.”
If an alternate ending for Shailene Woodley and Theo James’ characters is going to happen, it won’t be a surprise. After all, the writers of “Allegiant” already introduced something that wasn’t found in Veronica Roth’s novels and that’s the “box.”
